Water Conservation
Water Conservation
Water is a precious resource that is often taken for granted. We use it in our homes, our gardens and in our workplaces and it makes sense to use it carefully. Water is not as abundant as we may think; the UK has less available water than many countries in Europe. Each person in the UK uses approximately 150 litres of water per day – this amount has been rising by 1% every year since 1930 and in the long term this consumption level is not sustainable.
There are many things we can all do to conserve water, such as:
- Take showers instead of baths, this uses around a third of the amount of water.
- Turn off the tap when cleaning teeth. Keeping the tap running can waste around 8 litres per minute!
- Wash vegetables in a bowl rather than under a running tap.
- Use the plug instead of letting the water run.
- Ensure burst pipes or dripping taps are fixed.
- Run washing machines and dishwashers with a full load.
- Keep a jug of ice cold water in the fridge; this avoids the need to run the tap until the water gets cold every time you want a drink.
- Fit a water saving devise to your cistern, this reduces the amount of water you use in each flush.
- Use washing up water to rinse out cans and bottles for recycling.
- Use a watering can instead of a hose pipe.
- Add a layer of mulch over the soil - this reduces water evaporation.
- Purchase a water butt to collect rain water to reuse in the garden. Please follow this link if you are interested in purchasing a water butt – www.uu2u.com
