Tameside Adult Services

  • Do you work in the Adult Services Sectors?
  • Do you need advice, guidance and support to meet cultural and language needs of Black and Minority Ethnic service users, carers or communities in Tameside?
  • Are you a member of the public and have an interest in how Adult Services meet the needs of the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities in Tameside?

The Race Equality and Diversity Team, part of Tameside Adult Services looks at equality issues and enables staff to meet the needs of the BME community.

Our Responsibilities

Tameside Council is committed to promoting equality.

Tameside Adult Services has responsibilities to meet statutory requirements laid out in the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 Link to External Website to -

  • Promote equality
  • Eliminate unlawful discrimination and
  • Promote good relations between different racial groups

Our Objectives

  • To support the Adult Services sector to ensure that Asian, Black and Minority Ethnic Communities needs are fully recognised and incorporated into our mainstream services and methods of delivery.
  • To enable the sector to achieve a Race Equality and meet statutory responsibilities around race and other equalities.

Projects

We have systematically piloted projects which have helped us to define and develop models of good practice and improve our ways of working to meet the above responsibilities. Examples of areas of work we have developed are listed below-

  • A bilingual co-worker scheme has been developed which enables us to deliver assessments and services more effectively and appropriately to communities. This has been highlighted as good practice by people such as the Social Services Inspectorate, National Black Carers Workers Network and the communities themselves.
  • We have delivered courses in the communities like a 'caring for people or children course' and more recently a carers course for Asian carers, where people come and find out their rights and our responsibilities to them and how to access services.
  • We support consultation projects and encourage representation from traditionally excluded sections of the community.
  • We have designed and implemented a Race Equality Improvement Steering Group with three groups. This helps us deliver a Race Equality Strategy. In the future we aim to use this model to address further equality issues. The four groups are:

    - Access to Information and Services
    - Workforce Planning
    - Planning and Delivery of Appropriate services

The ethnic monitoring of people using services is done according to guidance from the government. The information we gather is used to help us ensure equality of access is being given to all sections of the community.  Ensuring that services are planned and delivered to meet all people needs as much as possible.

A summary of the activities of the four different groups is available.
