Tameside Road Safety Unit
Tameside Road Safety Unit provides the following services for all age ranges and all types of road users:
The Unit are also responsible for the management and delivery of the School Crossing Patrols Service
Education
Road Safety staff visit every primary school in the Borough to deliver the School Crossing Patrol Club to all year three children.
The interactive presentation promotes pedestrian skills, traffic awareness, "be safe be seen" and the safe use of all crossing facilities including School Crossing Patrols
All children receive an information pack including posters, bookmark and a work book.

Crucial Crew
Every year 6 pupil in Tameside is invited to attend ‘Crucial Crew’, a multi-agency safety event aimed at raising awareness and providing life skills to 10 to 11 year olds. Messages are delivered throughout each scenario and the agencies involved includes:
- Tameside Police
- Tameside Council Road Safety Team
- Tameside Council Patrollers
- British Transport Police
- Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service
- Ambulance Service
- Countryside Wardens
- Women’s Refuge
The sessions are held at the Territorial Army Barracks in Ashton-under-Lyne and the overall message delivered by Tameside Police is:
- Respect
- All
- Children
- Equally
Game Over
Road Safety staff provide education at primary schools for year six pupils to help them with the transition period from primary to secondary school. The session helps draw their attention to the new dangers that they will face as independent travellers.
Kerbcraft
The Road Safety Unit provides a Child Pedestrian Skills training coordinator who organises kerb-side training for Year 1 children throughout the Borough. View more information on Kerbcraft.
Younger Children
We are happy to visit nurseries or voluntary groups like Brownies, Cubs, Rainbows etc to do a road safety presentation or test your group for badges. We will supply all nurseries with free information for parents, children and nursery nurses, including videos and CD roms on request. Even Younger
The Unit has established links with the local SureStart Services and can provide road safety resources to new parents and to establishments. Please complete the online form to request the Home and Road Safety Pack.
Secondary Schools
These are visited on request and any information you need for projects with a road safety theme will be supplied. Please complete the online form to make a request for the Schools Information Pack.
Pre-Driver Training
Driving Standards Agency advisers are happy to visit all secondary schools to talk to Year 11 pupils and advise them on how to get the best from their driving lessons and help them to learn about the driving test.
They will also visit employers or any groups who would like to have a presentation. For further information contact Kevin Rigby on 0161 368 6632.

Parents
Help and advice is available to parents for teaching children road safety . Information is also available at www.thinkroadsafety.gov.uk .

School Travel Plans
The Road Safety Unit is involved in promoting the School Travel Plans initiative throughout the authority.
All schools involved are asked to survey the routes and methods of transport used by their pupils and parents and the information is then used to identify problems and dangers on the way to and from school. These are analysed and safety methods are designed to make the journeys safer. If you would like further information or to be involved in these projects please contact us.

Training
The Road Safety Unit offers Safer Cycling Courses to Primary and Secondary Schools throughout the year. Your school must be involved in the School Travel Plans initiative but once signed up the free course will help keep young cyclist safer when they are riding on the roads. We can also offer advice for families who wish to train together.
Cycling is very poplar with young children, and as they grow up, the time comes when a bike is no longer a toy, but their very own mode of transport!
BikeRight ! offers cycling training to suit any age or ability, from taking the basic first steps to teaching the skills and knowledge to keep them safe on today’s roads.
The Unit has links with pre driver training establishments for Car and Motorbike training and can advise you on the recommended driving instructors in your area.

In a bid to help reduce further the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads, the Greater Manchester Casualty Reduction Partnership, or Drivesafe as it is also known, has been reformed to incorporate all aspects of road safety, including speeding. Drivesafe is still working towards the Greater Manchester target of a 50% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads before 2010 and although it has been very successful to date, the Partnership is always looking for ways to improve.
In 2003, Greater Manchester formed a multi-agency partnership made up of the 8 Borough and 2 City Authorities with the County, the Highways Agency, Greater Manchester Police, MPCT, Her Majesty’s Courts Service and the Crown Prosecution Service.
The partners are all full committed to working together to address the issue of road safety through a mix of engineering, education and enforcement initiatives.
All Road Safety Campaigns are covered by the "Think" logo to promote national awareness. Did you know that the Department for Transport 'Think' website has masses of educational information and down loads related to all the road safety campaigns and lots of free publicity stuff to help you teach or learn more about road safety.
