Northern Star Dancers Press Release
Northern Star dancers from Ashton’s Indian Community Centre join the action at Liverpool Carnival 2008
Twenty eight young men and women from the Indian Community Centre in Ashton seized the opportunity to represent Tameside this weekend when they joined the celebrations of Liverpool Capital of Culture. The parade thread through the streets of south Liverpool, leading to Princes Park. It included 2000 people from across the region, from drummers, to dancers and some of the most elaborate carnival costumes outside of Notting Hill. Ashton’s young people adapted some of their normal dance routine steps to animate the parade and drew a big response from the crowd, who joined in with their traditional Indian dance moves.
After a picnic in the park the two groups of dancers had the chance to get up on stage and performed their own dances to the carnival crowd.
Usha Lad, Group Leader, said “the kids loved it! Everyone thought it was a fantastic day out, the weather was great and they loved the parade and all the attention, with people taking photos and videos. They were very happy that they had a chance to go on the stage, because they had been practising the dance for the last six weeks. When they saw them on the stage, someone from Germany came up to us to ask if we were interested in visiting them!”
Sophie Mackreth, Tameside’s Arts Development Officer said “We are really pleased that funding from Association of Greater Manchester Authorities was available to support groups from across the region to take part in the spectacle. It takes a lot of hard work from the dancers, passion and enthusiasm from the volunteers who run the group and we’ve been happy to support their involvement.”
