Family History

Research your family history at Tameside Local Studies and Archives. We have census returns, parish and nonconformist registers, monumental inscriptions, indexes to wills, the IGI, the 1881 census index and other CD Roms and free public access to the internet, including free access to Ancestry.co.ukLink to External Website.

Advice sessions run by the Cheshire Family History Society are held 2pm - 4pm on the first and third Tuesday of every month. For more information visit our family history page

Tameside Image Archive

Photograph of Hyde Co-op circa. 1900Search this selection of old photographs from the collection of Tameside Local Studies and Archives Service. Currently over 20,000 images are available online, you can purchase copies with a credit or debit card. We are adding images all the time and this is only part of the old photograph collection. Please contact the Archives Section for details of other pictures not yet available online. If you can add any information about the images you can see here we'd love to hear from you.


Online Enquiries

Use our on-line enquiry form to contact the Local Studies and Archives Unit for help and advice if you are: researching your family history; writing a thesis or essay on any aspect of the history of the area; doing a school project on a local theme; interested in finding out about the history of the place where you live; planning anniversary celebrations for a local club or organisation; wishing to use local material in reminiscence work. There is a minimum charge of £1.50 for photocopies sent by post. Additional sheets are 10p each for A4 photocopies, 20p each for A3 photocopies and 50p each for copies from microfilm.
