Tameside Council : Best in the North West
Tameside Council has done it again. The authority has been given four star and "improving strongly" rating by inspectors for the second time in a row - placing it in the top 5% of best performing councils in the country.
Government spending watchdog the Audit Commission praised Tameside's performance for being "consistently high" and "even further improved in areas that local people say are important".
Improvements have been made in a number of key areas: educational attainment is improving faster than the national average; unemployment is lower than the Greater Manchester average; inward investment is high; crime levels are low; and life expectancy is increasing.
Yet this has been achieved on a low cost base - last year Tameside's Council Tax increase was set as just 2.73% - the third lowest increase for all metropolitan boroughs.
The Audit Commission in their direction of travel (DOT) 2007 CPA report stated:
"Tameside Council is improving strongly and continues to make significant improvement in its priority areas. Not only is performance consistently high, but it is improving even further in areas that local people say are important. Progress is particularly strong in its priorities of supportive communities, improving the borough's appearance, and public safety and tackling crime. The Council makes an excellent contribution to improving adults' health and well-being and increasing access to services for older people from minority groups. Children's services continue to improve. Educational attainment levels are the highest yet often exceeding national averages with minority communities performing particularly well. Economic growth remains good, with levels of inward investment and job creation continuing to out-perform regional averages and many jobs going to local residents. Excellent improvement across priority areas is supported by good foundations for further progress. Challenging, yet well-considered, plans are in place to achieve local targets and the achievement of value for money is now excellent. Underperformance is proactively addressed, for example through service redesign. The Council is realistic about future challenges, working well with partners and continuing to tackle health inequalities."
